Not worth the full price, but for sure pick it up on sale. It's a very light no stakes experience. The world and setting are both beautiful. The dialogue is a little bit corny and sometimes cartoonish, but I wouldnt say thats an issue. You have to be into it though. It is a very light RPG that you can pick and play a few hours and you wont feel bad about it.

Recommended60 hours playedEnglishI love this game. It got me out of bed some mornings, and kept me up late into the night as I worked to discover and survive in a completely new world. Combat is engaging and fun with really cool spell effects. The game appeals to all your senses - the sound is notably great with attention to those things you hear close up as well as in the distance. I was impressed with underwater animations; how realistically transparent the glass looks in the game, and with how beautiful the art is in general. There is so much detail in the game when it comes to loot. Documents to read, materials to process and craft, coins and other valuables. But loot isn't burdensome - there are filters and ways to navigate easily between what your character is collecting and wearing. I like that there are no respawns, so you are able to take your time in each area to thoroughly finish quests and side quests, and that's what I would recommend doing so you are able to experience all the beauty this game has to offer. I can't wait to play again, and because choices do matter, it will be a whole new campaign with new opportunities to experience, (to some extent).

Many of Avowed's problems stem from its lineage: the Pillars of Eternity games are best-in-class among modern CRPGs with excellent build systems and exquisite writing. So, when Obsidian announced a FPS RPG set in the same word, there was much to be expected. And, largely, it falls short of those expectations. The writing is atrocious. For a game that deals with politics and is steeped in the importance of perspective and nuance (colonialism is a prime subject here and a subject worth exploring), the writers deal only in obvious exposition. It reads like a bad YA novel and assumes you, the reader, are a complete dunce incapable of critical thought. Characters lore dump for you as impartial experts in the subject and everyone tells you, ad nauseam, what you need to know with no reading between the lines required. The only villains are mustache-twirling stereotypes. Delivery is often sardonic, with one of your companions serving as a living embodiment of millennial culture in every insufferable way possible. There are a least several opportunities to respond: "Yikes." Combat is similarly trivialized. No real classes, just three skill trees (you guessed it: fighter, rogue, wizard) and comparable weapons for those. Whereas previous games, and many others in the category, differentiate between types of damage (crush, slash, pierce, etc.), this does none of that. A weapon is a weapon with the only variable being stamina cost. As usual, mages edge out the competition in terms of interesting abilities, but even those don't get too exciting beyond "big AoE". It's a real shame seeing that the foundational world for Avowed, Eora, is so well hashed out in previous titles and that deep, deep lore is squandered here.
